PRODUCTION AT ISKENDERUN FACILITIES IS SET TO RESUME IN 2023
“We aim at commissioning new NPK compound fertilizer facility in the early 2023 thanks to our ongoing investments to re-operationalize the Turkey’s first fertilizer factory at our Iskenderun facilities for production” says Mr. Yumaklı, General Director of GÜBRETAŞ.”
Noting that they have been continuing investment process for construction of new warehouses and compound fertilizer at Iskenderun facilities of the corporation, Mr. İbrahim Yumaklı, General Director of GÜBRETAŞ explains “At our Iskenderun facilities which has been serving only as a harbor since 2007, we aim at commissioning new NPK compound fertilizer facility with a capacity of 200 thousand ton/year in early 2023 once we completed our investments to render the Turkey’s first fertilizer factory operational for production again. When our facility put into service, it will boost our current compound fertilizer production capacity by 25 percent, while contributing in national economy thanks to the new employment opportunities we created for the region.”
Mr. Yumaklı answered the questions of AA respondent about GÜBRETAŞ and plans for the next period.
Pointing out that adverse effects of the climate change were felt more than over in this first quarter of this year characterized by the increased consumption nitrogenous fertilizers driven by increased agricultural production, Mr. Yumaklı adds that, although varies by region, farming areas were lacking in sufficient precipitation compared to last year.
Highlighting that extreme differences between temperatures of day and night, sudden temperature changes, and frosts have led to loss of crop yield, Managing Director explains that “Our producers worked harder than ever to ensure continuity of agricultural production amid pandemic and adverse climate conditions, and GÜBRETAŞ, assuming the responsibility of an industrial pioneer, continuously supplied all plant nutrition products that our farmers much needed in that period struck by the pandemic. In addition, GÜBRETAŞ’s skilled agricultural engineers persistently continued to provide our farmers consulting services either face-to-face by taking strict pandemic measures, or via online communication channels.”
Mr. Yumaklı concludes that plant nutrition industry has left first quarter of the year behind as a part characterized by constantly increasing commodity, raw material and freight costs in the international markets, with delayed or cancelled delivery of the certain orders which were committed months ago.
NEXT-GEN FERTILIZER PRODUCTION EFFORTS AT R&D GREENHOUSE CONTINUE AT FULL STEAM
Indicating that GÜBRETAŞ, in this challenging period, focused on sourcing the products needed and making them available at the distribution points in a timely manner in line with our market share and budget targets, General Director Mr. Yumaklı evaluates “As a result of this hard work, we can say that we achieved, as of end of first quarter, the budget targets of this year, notably of sales, production and profitability.” When our financial and operational results of 1st quarter are made publicly available in the following days, it will be seen that we are still maintaining our fast pace following the last year which we closed with record-breaking results.”
Noting that they have been carrying out R&D activities with many motivations such as to support conscious and sustainable farming, to produce plant nutrition products which will improve agricultural efficiency, and to conduct studies which will reduce dependence of industry on the raw material import.” Mr. Yumaklı explains:
“GÜBRETAŞ R&D Center launched with the permission of Ministry of Industry and Technology in 2018 has driven the R&D activities of our corporation with momentum. In this context, we have left two productive years behind in the comprehensive R&D project launched in order to prevent plant nutrient loss due to conventional fertilizer applications, and to innovate liquid fertilizer specific to plant, with the support of Directorate General of Agricultural Research and Policies of Ministry of Agriculture and Forest. We are planning to finalize the Project with the report to be issued after trial cultivations during this year.
The year 2020 closed with important developments for GÜBRETAŞ in terms of R&D. Our efforts has been continuing at full steam for the production of next-gen fertilizers at R&D Greenhouse set up under Industry-university collaboration scheme, launched in Gebze Technical University in October.
And with the biotechnological studies at Microbiology Laboratory equipped with state-of-art technology, opened in November, we are aiming at developing new product patterns which will positively contribute to the agricultural efficiency, and bring a fresh breath to the our import-dependent chemical fertilizer industry.”
DIJIEX EFFORTS FOR OPERATONAL EXCELLENCE
GÜBRETAŞ General Manager Mr. Yumaklı notes that corporations and businesses are directly experiencing the necessity of digital transformation, driven by the global pandemic, adding that they are among the companies which were already ready to new business processes mandated by the pandemic thanks to investments they have been making to reinforce their technological infrastructure for many years.
Pointing out that, as GÜBRETAŞ, they approach digitalization as a profitable investment which facilitate operational efficiency and savings, Mr. Yumaklı says “We are also striving in 2021 to keep this momentum that we gained in digital transformation”.
Listing their priority targets in this area as keeping technological infrastructure up-to-date, and using RPA technology to reduce operational burdens and improve business efficiency, and developing processes, ensuring labor savings, and reinforcing the instant and solid reporting skills, General Directors explains:
“We are furthering digital transformation in GÜBRETAŞ by the Digital Excellence (DijitEx) efforts we initiated this year to upgrade the lean six sigma and Operational Excellence (Opex) process we have been implementing since 2017 to an Industry 4.0 driven advanced level.
TRAINED OVER 50 THOUSAND FARMERS ON SOIL ANALYSIS
Mr. Yumaklı reminds that increased need for food, mainly caused by the constantly growing world population, today requires the conscious and sustainable farming practices, highlighting that COVID-19 pandemic clearly demonstrated the critical role that conscious farming plays in ensuring food security.
“With the awareness of our responsibility as the first company in plant nutrition sector, they have been pioneering the conscious farming efforts” explains, Mr. Yumaklı “thus, we are making contributions for farmers to cultivate high yield and high quality products.”
“Driven by this mindset, for many years, Model Production Areas have been established to raise awareness on soil analysis, balanced plant nutrition and proper use of the chemical fertilizer, and meetings have been organized to bring agricultural engineers and farmers together” says, Mr. Yumaklı adds:
Over 50 thousands farmers were trained on the soil analysis in our Turkey Soil Efficiency project we have been implementing since 2006 with a view to quantify the soil efficiency of our country and create an important data repository for the industry.
At the same time, we provide our producers information support in the field through our skilled agricultural engineers working in every corner of our country; as well as online via GÜBRETAŞ Customer Services Hotline, GÜBRETAŞ Mobile Hotline, and GÜBRETAŞ EGP mobile app.”
COMMISSIONED PHASE 1 OF HARBOR FILLING PROJECT AT YARIMCA FACILITIES
Mr. Yumaklı highlights that, in recent years, they especially focused on the facility investments in order to promote operational efficiency and achieve cost optimization, recalling that, despite the adverse impacts of the pandemic, they were successfully completed and commissioned the Phase 1 of the Harbor Filling Project at Yarımca Facilities.
General Manager noted that they aim at completing the Phosphoric and Sulfuric Acid Tanks projects in this new fill area by the end of the year.
Mr. Yumaklı also enlightens us about their preparation works at Iskenderun Facilities:
“At Iskenderun Facility, we are continuing our investments on new warehouses and compound fertilizer production facility. “We aim at commissioning new NPK compound fertilizer facility with a capacity of 200 thousand ton/year in the early 2023 thanks to our ongoing investments to re-operationalize the Turkey’s first fertilizer factory at our Iskenderun facilities – which has been serving only as a harbor since 2007 – for production. When our facility put into service, it will boost our current compound fertilizer production capacity by 25 percent, while contributing in national economy thanks to the new employment opportunities we created for the region.”
